To truly unlock the potential of our students, it’s essential to engage their most influential supporters—their families. Research shows that when parents are actively involved in their child’s education, especially in subjects like math, students perform better, show greater confidence, and develop a more positive attitude toward learning.
During middle and high school, math can become increasingly challenging, and students begin to question its relevance. This is why it is so important to involve parents and families in students' middle and high school years. By engaging families, we can bridge the gap between school and home, ensuring that students have access to the support they need to succeed. When parents understand what their children are learning and see the real-world applications of math, they can reinforce these concepts at home, making math a common thread from the classroom to the living room.
One way to foster family engagement is by hosting a Math Family Night. Imagine a school event where families come together to explore math in a dynamic and interactive way. The evening could feature student projects that showcase their math skills, career panels with professionals who use math in their jobs, and hands-on games and activities that make math fun for everyone. These elements not only make math more approachable, but also highlight the practical importance of math in everyday life and future careers. Plus, students can become part of the event, hosting activities and displaying projects.
In addition to student participation, this is a great opportunity to call on parents who have careers in professions that deal with math - retail workers, accountants, bank tellers, financial advisors, construction workers, architects, etc. - to be panelists or run different activities. Making career connections will help students understand the relevance and importance of sharpening their math skills.
This type of community event is an opportunity to build an increasingly strong partnership between schools and families. It empowers parents to support their children’s math education, helps students see the value of math in their future, and provides students a chance to demonstrate leadership and learning.
